SUNRISE ARCHAEOLOGY

Services

We have experience with a range of archaeological services for field surveys, assessments, historic structures, and guiding clients through the process of obtaining Archaeological Authorities from Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. Sunrise Archaeology also operates an in-house wood and charcoal identification laboratory.

Archaeological Surveys and Assessments

Archaeological surveys and assessments provide information on whether there might be items of heritage value on a property. In the planning phase of developments, this helps landowners understand statutory requirements regarding archaeological materials. Advice and recommendations on avoidance or mitigation are provided.

Archaeological Authorities

We guide clients through the process of applying for an Archaeological Authority, and preparation of site management plans when needed.

Archaeological Monitoring

Planning advice is provided regarding locations for earthworks, access for heavy machinery. Monitoring involves on-site inspection of ground-disturbing activities for subsurface work such as preparing building platforms, placing foundations, digging utility trenches, and removing or planting trees in plantation forests.

Archaeological Excavation

We have experience conducting archaeological excavations, from solo work to large groups that include volunteers of all ages. We are committed to timely processing of recovered materials and report production.

File Searches

Desktop file searches on the archaeological background of properties are useful in pre-purchase or pre-planning activities.

Buildings (Built Heritage)

When assessment and recording of historical buildings is needed, we have experience working on some of the oldest structures in New Zealand.

Wood and Charcoal Identification

Sunrise provides in-house taxonomic identification services for wood and charcoal samples from archaeological and non-archaeological sources. Our expertise includes New Zealand and the Chatham Islands, many parts of tropical Polynesia, and Micronesia.

Research

We specialise in Northland archaeology, but our research work began on the Chatham and Marquesas Islands. It has expanded to include many areas of New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. We continue to conduct research and publish in scholarly venues, and give the occasional lecture.
